How much is the going rate for tightening/replacing the handbrake cable in a garage? Someone was going to do it for me but he let me down and I'm not mechanically minded!

New rear cables available from FMP Swansea for less than a fiver Bring it down here on a weekend and i'll put it on for you. If it just needs adjustment have you adjusted up the rear brakes?

Cheers for the offer Phil I really appreciate that but its SORN at the mo! lol I haven't got axle stands here either :/ I had a little tinker with it earlier on but it wasn't having and of it. Got some cable from minispares. I dont think its snapped because it does hold the car, but the handbrake needs to be up al the way, which makes me assume that the cable has stretched maybe?

Ideally you should only have about 4 clicks on the handbrake itself. Check at the back of the handbrake where the cable attaches to. There's a small black bracket with a special nut which the threaded end of the cable goes through. Check to see if the cable at this point is very slack.

Unless my memory is shot, if you look under or was it behind) the handbrake you will see there is a length of threaded stud which is actually the end of cable. Even if the drum is out of adjustment, as a short term fix, if you hold the end of the thread with a pliers and adjust up the 3/8 nut (it may be double nutted tolock the nut to stop it from spinning) so it looks as if the thread is extending then you will be tightening the cable. It will do until you can get the car up in the air to sort the rear drums. Adjust it to leave 4-5 clicks as dai says.

And check to see if the handbrake cable has not come out of it's guide. There are 2 guides fixed to the centre of the subframe. If one cable has partly slipped off the guide that could also account for the "upright" handbrake.
