Hello,
This thread is aimed at trying to give people more of a scope on what camshafts are good, and ones that are designed for a certain reason.
The reviews are based on pure personal choice and my style is nice and torquey, with out revving the balls off the 'lil A-Series.
Please add your own review, but I hope to of covered the more popular cams available on the market.
All Cams, are based on a 1275 (unless otherwise stated).
Key:
* = Poor, good use for a mantel decor
***** = Awesome cam, well worth the money
Black = Ok-ish cam - depending on CC size
Blue = Mild, VERY mild
Green = A good Road Cam for Traffic
Purple = For those weekend worriors
Orange = Fresh pants, and crow bar needed (for removing fingers from dash board)
12 A 1065 - this is the standard camshaft - good if your into 998 tuning, but better off with something better in a 1275 [*]
A+ 998 - If pure grunt and no revvyness is wanted, this your cam, will pull trains on a 1380, made 80ft/lb torque, but only 60bhp. [**]
C-AEG 529 - This is also known as the trusty 649, power is all top end, its a good cam, lots of power, but extreamly lumpy. [****]
C-AEA 544 - A weekend/trackday motor cam, power and torque, but lumpy. [**]
C-AEA 800 - An ST cam, blooming brill, but hard to come by. [***]
C-AEG 567 - The all infamous Cooper 997 cam, torquey, VERY torquey, almost SW5 like. [****]
C-AEG 595 - Trackday ONLY, proper screaming cam. [***]
MG Metro - Darn good useful cam, nice upgrade for screaming 998's, or a nice cheap alt for "fast road" 1275, made 70bhp - 72ft/lb as standard in the MG Metro. [****]
Kent 266 - Kents mild cam, this is a good cam if you want a little more than standard [**]
Kent 276 - Better than the 266, but not as smooth tick over as the 266. [**]
Kent 286 - This is a true hardcore cam, power doesn't come in till about 2500rpm, but will pull till around 8k rpm, but a VERY lumpy idel [***]
Kent 286SP - SP meaning Scatter Profile, this is reprofiled FOR A-Series engines, more power, more torque than the 286, well worth its money for a street racer. [****]
Kent 296 - VERY lumpy tickover, also undriveable in town, but blooming awesome on the track. [***]
SW5 - "Knocks your socks off" torque, amazing for daily motors, darn its worth the money. [*****]
SW5-07 - Slightly reprofiled SW5, this is what I am going to using in my 1380, gives more power, and even more torque again, Swiftune come up trumps. [******]
SW10 - Reprofiled Kent286, this cam is designed to give nicer emmissions at MOT, and be a little more bareable in traffic. [****]
MSPD ph2 - Very SW5-ish, nice and torquey, designed for Torque heads like me, but gives a little more top end than the SW5. [*****]
MSPD ph3 - Truely an awesome street cam, lumpy idel, but when it gets going, hold on! [****]
Hope that helps the home-grown engine builders out there, please add your own, and I'll update this post as more cams are designed.
