I had my alternator overhauled several years ago when it started to make rude noises by a local auto electrician firm and they fitted new brushes and bearings. So several years on and it's still working fine, I got to keep my original alternator and it cost a fraction of the price that an exchange unit normally costs. I've heard that fitting a Pug 306 Diesel battery works wonders and it will fit in the battery well of a Mini. Fitting an uprated alternator is also worthwhile if your Mini has loads of spot lamps and/or a big stereo and Mini Spares now supply a 70amp job.
