hi
ive had clutch issues so taken the engine out of mine for now and dropped a 72 clubman engine in only issue is we have now noticed that the old engine is pre engaged starter motor and the clubman engine is an inertia starter motor.
so can the clubmans starter motor be wired up? if it can does anyone know how or know where there are any wiring diagrams that may help
thanks jamie

The solenoid for the Pre-engaged starters sits on top of the starter. The inertia starters had seperate solenoids either fixed to the inner wing or to the clutch housing. The main battery cable fits this type of solenoid with another cable going to the starter from the solenoid. Then there are 3 sometimes 4 smaller spade connections feeding off the solenoid. These feed the ignition etc. I'll try and find a diagram for you.

Here's a diagram of the solenoid (4) for pre76 Minis with an alternator. N is Brown cable. NU is Brown / Yellow cable. WR is White / Red.

i know im probably wrong but...isnt it possable to pop the original starter onto the new engine?....be easier than re-wiring and adding solenoids?

You'd need to change the flywheel. The starter ring is different for pre-engaged starter, different teeth and more of them.

The White /red cable is the cable coming off the bottom right of the solenoid (T). The other cable top right of the solenoid is Brown. This cable should be thinner than the other Brown cable. This cable also goes to the ignition switch.

thanks for your help dai we managed to get it all wired up and the engine is running nicely! now just one other question the carb fitted is we think a 1000 carb so is this ok to run on a 1100 engine, or are we correct in thinking it will need to be jetted or the needle changed to run properly? thanks jamie

What size is the carb, 1 1/4 or 1 1/2.? My guess is it's the latter size. Shouldn't be a problem running that carb although a good tune up wouldn't do any harm to get it running spot on.

The smaller SU will work OK with a 1100 motor. About 1974 BL started using the 1 1/2 SU on all their A series Mini engines.

Ok it's a 72 engine so the 1 1/4 will be fine with a. Tune up? Or would you still recommend changing it? Thanks!

Yeah, use it, but make sure the mixture is checked. If the mixture is too weak you'll be down on power, too rich and you'll wash the bores and cause piston ring wear.. The above would be the same for any carb not set up properly. Good luck.
