not a happy bunny....mot on tues and tax today, and now she decided to a typical female and throw a paddy...!!!
symptoms are....ok ticking over but not enough omph to pull a skin of a banana....i`ve got her running okish till she reaches 2000rpm or 30mph...then its cutting back, backfiring and acting stuffed...pull out the choke and it runs better, tried adjusting the mixture but no effect
tried a new coil, (x2, balasted and non balasted just incase)...cleaned the cap and rotor arm (leki ignition)....tried as best i can to do the timing (set it up the same as medusa)...
spark good, lots of fuel, brand new plugs, fresh oil and filter....what am i missing???

Sticking vacuum advance? Take dizzy out, blast through the base plate with wd40 and make sure the bobweights are free. (Dads suggestion)

Loosen off the dizzy, start the car and carefully wind the dizzy around until the revs pick up, you can tell by ear if it is sounding better, try both directions but make a mark where you started from so it can be put back if needs be. Sounds to me like the timing is out.

as boycie said.....turned the dizzy both ways, and by ear it sounds spot on.....starts first turn and ticks over fine....i did try putting the timing out a bit more but its coughing and spluttering wherever we put it.....grrrrr
weird one yet again...why cant i have something simple wrong....lol

Silly question, but is it possible that the needle has come out of the bottom of the carb dashpot and it isn't lifting with the pot, this wouldn't be affected with the choke as the choke drops the jet down to lift the idle. Have you also checked the dashpot oil? Strange one that!

Only things I can think of is what has already been checked Not sure if a split vacuum pipe would cause it?

afaik...vac pipe is new but will swap it off medusas (that is def new) and give it a try....
the only other thing i can think of is hg failure......but havent got one here to sort it so if it is that she`ll be stuck in the garage for another week....

i put the compression tester on it earlier...cant remember the readings though but they were pretty constant...the two inner cylinders were a tad down on the outside two but not very much at all...
cant think of anything else we tried earlier....gonna be trying the carb stuff and dizzy tomorrow morn....smoke signals comming from the house mean ive got a gallon of petrol and a match on it...lol

well shes running....but untested appart from about 1/2 a mile to see if she was running....
turned out it was the head gasket...a quick phonecall to autoparts in ponty and luckly they had a set....she really needs tuning but that can wait for another week....lol...
medusa is now sulking.....looks like the alternator is playing up so she def wont be there tomorrow, got one here but ran out of time and energy...lol
