the 1989 1275 metro engine that was in your car was leaded but was changed to unleaded so i would say an 89 engine is normally leaded.my 91 metro was unleaded tho.

how would i find out if its leaded or un with out taking the head off? Run the car with a tankfull of unleaded in it....... You wont do any harm to the engine-short term. If it pinks and splutters and f@rts its "leaded" so add some octane booster additive to the fuel mix. If it runs OK then its "unleaded" already

All it will do is show that the timing is to advanced for the lower octain level of unleaded petrol. The ONLY way to see if its unleaded is to take the head off.

You are, of course, perfectly correct lj, however if it runs OK on unleaded do you really need to do anything more ?

If it runs ok then no just run it, the lead deposits that have built up over years will protect the valve seats but eventuality it will burn off so putting a bit of additive every few tanks will help keep them protected .
But the question was how do you find out if its unleaded and the only way is to take the head off and look for the steal inserts
