Yep, OK to drive it with the heater off, as long as the heater shut off valve doesnt leak too - but will be a bit frosty around the legs - I know, I have had this same problem. Look out for replacement heater at Malvern - don't bother with just the matrix, you should be able to pick up a replacement for £15 ish
Keep an eye on the radiator water level as well
Wear some thick socks and take a flask!

A few years back I bought a good second hand heater motor for my sisters Mini from Selective Mini Spares of Barry. I could have done a straight swap for the whole heater unit/casing at the same price, but I only took the knackered motor with me. I wasn't too bothered because I'd already cleaned out the old casing and it was mint anyway. But be wary of the second hand heater matrix as you could just end up buying another faulty one which wouldn't be much fun. Most of the top Mini specialists stock brand new matrix's, so I'd compare prices.

If it's coolant coloured rain then no it's probably the matrix after all. Some things are not worth buying second hand, because it can be a right potch replacing them and a real nightmare if you have to do it all over again because the second hand replacement is no better or worst. Either that or I'm just not lucky with second hand stuff?

Can only speak from experience but maybe I've just been lucky, The 2nd hand unit I bought for £15 is like new and works fine
Not everything you buy from a car boot sale is knackered
Yes there aresome con merchants out there but If you dont give it a go you will never know for sure.
