The Oil pump is underneath the flywheel housing, ie: engine out. As for the type of pump, until you get it off it's difficult to know what type is on there, 2 bolt 4 bolt, spider drive, slot drive, peg drive.

Is your Oil Pressure Warning light coming on other that when you 1st turn the ignition on?

Is your Oil Pressure Gauge the electrical type or the mechanical capillary type?

Maybe its just a case of blowing out a blockage in the capillary pipe or replacing the electrical pressure transducer unit.

Gotta be worth checking before the "engine out" option.

I lost all indication of oil pressure coming back from a show one time but the engine sounded OK and no Oil Pressure warning light came on..... Turned out it was that electrical Oil pressure transducer which I replaced for about £20 - sorted.

Did you change the filter as well and if so did you fill the new filter with oil before screwing it back on.?

20w40 is to thin for a mini as its also the gearbox oil. When rover changed over to the K series engine they changed their service data (oil specs etc ) across the range which also incorrectly included the mini.

You should not need to prime the pump but if you wish to. Simply unbolt the bango bolt that supplys the oil filter and then pour some oil into the hole in the block.
