After snapping a wheel stud and replacing it (see other post)
I have now just tried to replace the front cones.
but failure......
Today.. one of my wheel studs (newly replaced) is spinning in the hub with the wheel nut (revolution style) still on.
Ive tried a lot to get the nut off. but im not getting anywhere. IM gonna try get some lock tight on the stud from behind just so that it will hold it on enough to get the nut off without cutting through the whole lot with a grinder..
Any other suggestions?? Really annoying!
Secondly.
Failed cone replacement as compressor tool didnt line up with cone thread. The cone can't be pre 1984 so must be new thread. Passenger side lined up fine. I can see down the hole and see that the thread is not pointing the way it should!
Any suggestions. Reading around sais that with old cones you should be able to remove the arm without compressing the cone?? Or destroy the cone with drills and then just compress the new cone?
Also is it o.k to remove the thick nut and line it up with the car on the ground then jack the car once the tool is in? Im thinking when under load the cone will line up....
Probably will leave it as is for now once i get the wheel nut/stud sorted. other things to get on with..

Strange set of events, enough to send even diehard Mini mechanics mad. As for the wheel stud make sure it isn't the wheel nut with a knackered thread. Happened to me before, thought the stud was spinning in the hub, but turned out to be the wheelnut with a stripped thread. If it is the stud, was it fully home on the drive flange when you changed it.? Don't quote me on this, but I think there are different studs to be had, ie; coarseness of splines where the stud sits in the drive flange. As for the cone it will be ok to take the tower bolt out with the wheels on the ground. Doing it that way actually helps because the cone is compressed. It may be possible to get the cone out without using the compressor by taking the top arm shaft out. Easy enough on the r/hand side, but a real cow on the passenger side due to the radiator being in the way. The above method is possible with severely lowered minis though, but I wouldn't recommend for standard ride height cars especially if you value your fingers etc.
