My mini has failed its MOT,due to excessive emissions. The tester seems to think that the Downton Conversion that was done before I bought the car is responsible(Wrong cam,non-matching rockers,an ECU that has been 'fiddled' with etc.) I have booked it into Moseley's Rolling Road(Vince) next week,to see if there is any way round the problem If anyone can throw any light on the dilemma,I would be pleased to hear from you. The car is a 1999 Rover Cooper,1.3 mpi. Otherwise, can somebody point me in the direction of the nearest high cliff !!!!!!!!!! ?

I have the same problem with mine. If you know the tester well ask him to take the air filter out, or do it before you go. Also when the emissions are being tested take the oil filler cap off to reduse the engine pressure. Put a good fuel cleaner additive in. That's what I have to do to mine.

Not for the mpi. It could be some thing as simple as a exhaust leak.

Had a phone call from Vince at Mosley's garage in Llandeilo,to say the my mini has now passed its emission test on the MOT.He said that he'd given it a good thrashing before and it passed with no problems.Apart from putting two new drive shaft boots on,he said the car was in good order. Three b***dy cheers !!! Picking it up tomorrow.

Only a small problem, but can anyone help ? Bearing in mind that the engine in my car has had a Downton conversion(Upgraded cam, stage three modified head etc.),what gap should the tappets be set at ? The rocker arm has roller bearings,if that makes any difference. Your advice would be most appreciated,a.s.a.p.,please.

I have those high lift roller bearings in mine. Your rocker tappets gap should be the same as "standard" Bri. 15 thou as I remember!

Standard is 12thou but a lot of uprated cam manufacturers recommend 15thou

Thanks Jackdaw and ljones for the information. I have also written to the Downton Engineering Workkshop Social Club(DEWS) to see if they can throw any light on what a 'Downton Conversion' actually was. One further point,Vince at Mosleys Garage in Llandeilo,is great mechanic/diagnostic chap to know.
