Sounds electrical to me Phill. Are you using standard points and condenser type ignition.? If so, could be the condenser breaking down.

That sounds about right for the dizzy. Check that your points haven't closed, just in case. The latest licenced Lucas parts are pants, those in the green / white boxes. Heard many a tale of the present Lucas gear packing up within a short space of time.

I agree that its the points that are the cause of non starting when hot. Had the points gap close all by itself on my MGB not so long ago. Fitted an electronic ignition dizzy and all has been fine since. Electronic "modules" that fit in or on the dizzy are OK but replacing the dizzy with a fully electronic dizzy is a safer (but more expensive!) option long term.

A 1275 cooper s is 2 degrees BTDC. That's about the norm for a 1275 engine, but the only way to get it spot on is on the rollers.

You could go about it another (cheaper) way phil....... Get everything cleaned and gapped correctly (plugs, points etc) then slightly loosen the securing bolt on the dizzy so that it can be turned. With the engine warm and running (no choke!) adjust the dizzy CW or CCW a fraction at a time then run the car around to ensure no backfiring or no "pinking" of the engine. When you are happy that its running correctly, mark the position of the dizzy against the engine block. You can then use a timing light to see exactly what advance / retard settings you've ended up with against the timing marks for future reference. Ask Gav if you need a 2nd opinion on this method as it seemed to work quite well for him before he pulled his engine out! ;D ;D
