Hmmm, nasty. Can't say I've seen that happen before DB. Did you have any clutch problems before the "heart attack".? Excessive wear in the thrusts and or clearance / end float is the only thing that could cause the thrusts to break up like that.

Wow that's impressive. Must have some huge thrust wear.

I take it that the centre main cap bolts were not loose.? Could more than likely be just worn thrusts and sheer bad luck.
The centre main journal looks to be undamaged though.

What could cause that sort of excessive wear on the thrust washers then ? Its a Metro engine with unknown history. Is it just down to normal wear and running with high mileage?

Lack of oil changes, high mileage, excessive clutch throw

I'm with daisy on this one ! Gotta be 10" to get the Mini proportions looking right! Those 13's just look like a gold painted version of whats already on there to me. I'm not a lover of 13's on Mini's to start with tho !

Oooh what a quandary stick with the original 10" or fit bigger 12's or 13's ,, My 40 is on 13s and the JC on 12s ,, if it were me I'd go for the 12s on the estate. as they appear to be more suitable and in keeping for the cars age ,, the difference in the steering weight is that much greater with the 13s over the 12s so being lighter it makes slow speed manoeuvring that much easier I'm the opposite to JD I prefer the 13" Sportpack wheels ok it makes the steering that much heavier over the 12" but the extra grip outweighs that for me and the down side to the 13" tyre is the cost ,, anything from 60+vat each I'll Quote Minisport for Yokohama's other Brands are available ,, 10" A008 165/70 R10 £49.63p and For the all round 12" A539 165/60 R12 £57.48p each and the A539 13" 175/50 R13 £69.16p each all prices are including Vat but if you go for these Sporty Yokohama A048R 175/50 R13 at £102.29 each(including the dreaded Vat) yes there are Budget Brands out there but the price difference is not that great but then that comes down to personnel choice / how deep your pockets are and how Friendly your tyre supplier is for the best deal Hope this info helps with deciding on the tyre/wheel size

Jd and myself have always had a difference of opion on 13" wheels I had some on my old cooper and I like them yes the steering is heavier but like you say the grip is very good. I won't be fitting 10" until the car gets restored so its either the 12" minlights or the 13" superlights I bought for my other car as I'm not spending more again as I will of spent enough on this engine.

It's 10's or 12's for me everytime had 13" sports pack rims and I didnt like the poor handling and the extra harshness cos of the low profile tyre
Some wider 12's give just as good grip I've got 12x6 and they work well.
