Does anyone know how these inlet manifolds should be plumbed up? ive got a rough idea but not certain about it

As far as I can tell, the heater pipe from the left hand (as you look at the engine from the front of the car) side of the cylinder head should be plumbed into the left hand side of the inlet manifold connection. The Outlet from the manifold is just a continuation of the pipe that goes to the heater. Basically the heated inlet manifold is just an in line connector if you know what I mean.

thank you very much dai, will connecting the inlet up make any difference to how the engine runs? as im having trouble with the car when driving it cold, it seems to backfire and miss alot when cold but when up to temperature its pretty good will connected the inlet up stop this from happening?

It will reduce performance (although probably not enough to notice) I'd say your problem is more mix related, its normal to slightly richen the mix in cold weather

What carb airfilter setup have you got?
Backfiring and missing can be a sign of engine timing being out.
We've had this discussion about heated inlet manifolds before on here and I think the overall opinion is that they are not worth connecting up for UK use.

Yeah really not worth it, the where designed in the 60's for cold weather rallys where carbs would suffer from carb icing. Britain doesn't get cold enough to cause such problems

I have had a carb freeze up in the past more than once. The type of air filter which allows more air into the carb, for example a K&N allows more cold air, depending on outside temperatures, can in the right conditions mess up your fuel / air ratios and create too cold a charge of fuel and air. This in turn can freeze the carb thus freezing the mixture.
On saying that I used to run open rampipes on twin 1 3/4 SU's in --5 celcius temperatures on certain rallies and didn't suffer any icing up problems. Could be that the exhaust manifold was keeping the air temperature in that area warm enough so as not to create any problems.
As alluded to above it might be a good idea to check your mixture is not running too weak to be on the safe side.

Have you upgraded the needle in the carb to take into account the K&N filters increased airflow Do you know what needle is in the carb now It will make a huge difference believe me. You can sort the backfiring issue by rotating the dizzy till the backfiring / missing stops and not so far that the engine starts "pinking". An easy 5 minute tweek without the need for a Krypton!

I have tweeked with the dizzy num, erous amounts of time to get it running better and where it is at now is very close to perfect but when underload in 4th gear and when it is cold it misses between mid and high rpm i cant time it up with my timing light as the bulb has gone
