Just got and fitted a rear towing eye to my Mini as I didnt want to butcher the rear subby or valance by slinging a wire rope around it. Found out that a Peugeot/Citroen Towing Eye (long type - £7 on fleabay!) is the perfect item to bolt through the existing hole in the rear subby and makes a great addition for when you need to tow the car backwards for whatever reason like onto the back of the breakdown wagon !!!!! I had to make a small cut out in the lip area of the rear valance and find a nut and spring washer to fit the towing eye thread (12mm I think) along with making a supporting plate to strengthen the subby section. The length of the towing eye is long enough to clear the valance and short enough to not stick out further than the bumper. 30 minute job and a dab of paint to treat the bare metalwork and "Jobs a goodun"
