I'd love a spot welder LJ but the problem I have is my supply to my garage is only on an extension lead at the moment until I put the armoured cable in, so I don't have a 20amp supply available to run one. I know I'm a sparky but it's just a busmans holiday sorting it out. ;D I can run my mig ok so I will sort it out that way and punch the panel with my joggler/hole punch Does anyone know if the arc welder attachment spot welders are any good as they only cost around £30. If you want a lend of one of those arc welder attachments let me know, just up the road from you. Or if you can bring the car up I've got a spot welder you can use.

Thanks Mike. The car still drives, so maybe I can get the repairs done behind the panel and then drive it up for the main panel. We'll see. Thanks for the offer anyway, most appreciated.

Lol, I just PM'd my phone number, give us a shout when you're home.
Like I said, we've got a bit more room there now if you want to bring the car up.

Right, just come in from the garage, I now have the remainder of the stuff I purchased so I decided to pull the top off the lump. It has a plate bonded to the engine with BMC 001 stamped on it, the head has MED 295 which I assume is the cam which is fitted, the head is a 12g940 with 36-31 valves with double springs fitted and the block is marked 12g1279 and the bore is around 73-74mm (my vernier battery is flat!). How can I tell if it has the metro turbo box fitted as I have been told? there is a casting number DAM2886 If anyone has info about MED builds please let me know. Scuse the poor iphone pics Not much room there! MED 295 Belt drive

The standard 1275 piston size is 70.625mm. Omega go up to 73.5 and 74 mm. If it's a 1430 there's a good chance the crank is a long stroker. The standard stroke is roughly 81.3 mm. Anything more than that would suggest a long stroke. The gearbox is an A + 4 bolt bearing retainer with a stronger Idler housing. Can't be sure if the Metro Turbos used this box or not. Will dig some more Lyn.

Surprised that there are only 9 studs holding that head down. Should really be 11 studder.

Thanks guys, I thought that when I saw the valves, once the shell is up to scratch the engine will be going into LFC along with the 40 weber on the oselli manifold. Both engine and carb will be freshened up first. I'll need to get a large bore lcb and a maniflow twin box but this is way off yet as I haven't made a start on the shell yet. I have ordered more panels from Moss Europe this week, been dealing with Oz Cooper who rebuilt the 70 cooper in last months mini world with the carbon roof and supercharger on it, nice guy as well. Dai, it is what it is m8, its been built by MED so I'll go with that for now, is it much work adapting for the extra 2 studs? I'll turn over the lump later and check the stroke length. It's pain not having a vernier handy though. Extra info will be good if anyone has any.

Right, bit of an update, I sent MED an email and they said MED 295 is just the head number and their record do not go back to 1990 which is the sort of era this was built. The block is not one of theirs which is probably why it hasn't been 11 studed. I feel a strip down is in order. With valve and bore sizes what they are, it must still be a bit of a torquey motor though. I may strip down to spec it all up and just order new arp bolts, centre main strap (if there isn't one fitted) new mains, lightened flywheel, rings and whatever else it needs and just rebuild it.
What stage do I need to get it to before I can get it balanced. ie do I need to get the bottom end completed and bolted up before sending it to get done? Where is the best place to get this sorted? Any opinions / good experiences?

Unsure about the BMC 001 tag. Could the previous owner shed any light on it.? To balance the bottom end you only need to take the Flywheel, backplate, crankshaft and the End Pulley (Rad end). Med can do that job for you. Might be someone closer mind. 11 Studs isn't really necessary unless you're going to thrash it around a race track etc. Simple enough machining job, but you may need a 11 stud head though. I used to have that mod on my rally engines only for peace of mind. Keep us informed of the stroke.

Maybe, but I doubt it, I also have a large family who also have THEIR priorities. I also have Fungus the equinox to sort out for now as well and he needs less work so that is the focus at the moment. Check it out here

Been up the garage having a bit of a clear up, the polo is now on the road and parked outside so decided to move the mini into the middle of the garage ready to to a bit of work on her. Put a freshly charged battery on her and after about 15 minutes of fault finding for things like no spark, then setting up the points (by eye then not understanding why it wont start with good sparks and fuel then realising the rotor arm is sitting on the wing (haha) she fired into life and runs fine. Needs the timing tweaking a little but hey ho. Drove it out of the garage, turned it around and then back in. Have to swap a few wheels around as the tens have rotted and are flat. Next to get the quater welded back in then the boot floor. Been here before methinks haha.

Spent about 2 hours up there today, started cleaning up the area inside the rear quarter ready to weld in some repair panels. Managed to get some welding done then run out of gas. Bloody typical. Anyway finished off without gas just so the repair patches are in there, once I get some more argon then I may put a few runs over the top just to tidy it all up. Looking sorry for itself. Replaced the 2 repair panels before repairing the lower part of the arch. Here's the arch repaired before I ran out of gas.
