She's home. Just gotta sort an MOT now. Price was right without one though. ;D Front. Rear. Needs a window winder handle, overhaul the brakes and a quick service. Also have a problem with the door locks......they don't! I have had the pass one off and found the tag which operates the lock was off, finally got it on but when it is locked and you press the button, it rides up and the lock opens. Anyone have a scooby?

She's in the garage now because of the locking problem, anyone have an idea about these old locking mechanisms before I strip it right down?

Looks lovely, thats a Hornet and an Elf in the club now Would be great to see it on the road for Malvern The problem I have is I go back on the rigs on the 7th and I'll be home on the 22nd so I got a real small window to get it sorted before the 26th. I will try though and just keep the fingers crossed it will pass or have an easy test. Gotta sort the locks soon though cos I wouldn't wanna park it anywhere otherwise.

They look like it but the latch looks like an earlier type. Although I am not sure for deffinate. I'll try tomorrow to see if they are interchangeable. Good call m8, and there's me thinking where I can get hornet or elf bits from!!!!! Doh.

Hi Lyn. I've found a door in the stores which is slightly alien. I beleive it's off a MK3 Elf Or Hornet. What do you think. If i get a chance tomoz i'll have a look at the locking Mechanism for ya.

Dai....you ferkin genius m8. That could have been taken of my Elf. Colour is spot on, door card, handles, the lot! (Oh apart from the yucky exterior I am desperate for a winder for the driver door as it has been broken off. You wanna part with it m8. Let me know. On the subject of the locking mech, could you check if there should be a spring fitted to the key mech in handle which should be keeping the actauting arm shut as when I push the button, it lifts the actuator which lifts the inner latch. I will check a modern handle tomorrow anyway but thanks for looking.

Ohh, I forgot to mention yesterday, it was my cars birthday. I took ownership on 2/10/08 and gave the log book back to the previous owner to send off on 3/10/08 and it said on the v5 date of manufacture : 3/10/1969. 39 years young. Well impressed.

Great coincidence. Riiiight. Some Pics of the latch etc. Stripdown was fairly easy, similar to MK3 on doors. The window glass needs to be wound up for this bit. The actual locking lever arm had come out of it's connection onto the door latch. There's a tiny C clip to take off before you can get the latch mechanism off the actuating arm. Be careful, they get lost oh so easy. This is how i think it should look. Couldn't see a spring holding the locking mechanism to the lever on the doorlatch gubbins. Is this the correct window winder handle for yours.?? Tip of the day. I drilled a small hole to stick the s/driver through because otherwise the screw head gets damaged because you can't get a decent purchase on the screw. Odd angle etc.

Dai...thanks buddy. That is the same winder as I need although I have ordered one from ebay so we'll see if it gets here. I don't have the black shroud base collar though. I will buy the lot off you if you wanna part with it m8. The problem I have is not so much the actuating lever being off the latch BUT when it is locked and you push the button, it seems to operate through the latch gubbins and pop the latch open? Maybe the hook in the picture isn't on my latch to keep it locked. I'll have to strip it out. Thanks for the info m8. Lyn

I have cured the lock situation, I found the offside one was fitted upside down and was actually the near side one, so fitted that and it works a treat. I then had to swap the near side to the offside but some fool had built it up incorrectly and the actuator lever was fitted to the lock housing not the button plunger housing. Strangely though you could operate the latch with it fitted incorrectly but it would not stay locked. Wierd eh? Next job will be to get an MOT then concentrate on re-finishing the body and tidying up the interior.

Didn't go offshore this week so I am on paid standby until further notice. ;D Been real busy today. Found some rot in the rear valance closing panel and the mot is due. Heres the pics. After scraping off the crap and running a flap disc across it. Cleaned Up So I made a template from card, And cut it out like so It should fit like this Welded it in place. first with a few spot welds through the front then all around the plate. Another view And another Then I seam sealed it around the welds and gave it a coat of primer then a coat of schutz. I then found a hole in the arch on the opposite side So I started again. Then coated this repair with schutz again. This was a pig of a job, poor lighting, overhand welding and I ran out of gas so had to scrounge my dads argon bottle off him (He wasn't best pleased) Then I turned my attention to the body work because even though it looks like a nice car, it is like an old womans legs with cellulite everywhere (sorry orange peel ;D ;D) Like this, it really lets down a nice motor. So I spent half hour or so rubbing down the boot with 1200 wet n dry and some soapy water then used some rubbing compound or a damp rag then buffed back on an argos £15 special, electric polisher. Not much guts in it but the 1200 really did all the work, and the final job looked like the following pics. Not quite as perfect as it looks in the pics but it really does make all the difference. Just gotta do the rest of the car now. Probably sort it the weekend cos I am busy tomorrow.
