What does that vacuum gauge do? - I want one as I have a clock, but I also have a digital one replacing my ashtray. Where you get it from & how much? Thanks

The vacuum gauge is esentially there to make sure the car is running well, it gives an indication of the vacuum pressure in the manifold. Pretty cool gauge as they tend to flick around like a boost gauge hehe Very easy to fit too, you just need to fit a y-piece to the dizzy vacuum hose then use that take-off to plug into the back of the gauge. Probably will also need a 12v switched feed I'd imagine, depending on the type of gauge.

And what does the vacuum pressure actually mean?

As my understanding goes it refers to a pressure differential between air in the manifold and the surrounding air. Different actions whilst driving create different air pressures in the engine, like whilst accelerating from rest at full throttle there is very little pressure difference, almost so that the engine is breathing at ambient air pressure. But if you are in gear going down a hill with your feet off the pedals, the engines air pressure will be higher since the speed is still there but the flow of air through the intake is not.

it all depends on which side of the butterfly the vacuum take off is, but essentially it will indicate how much air is being sucked into the engine. a pretty point less gauge really as all you have to do is look at your right foot to see how much throttle your giving it and actually listen to the induction to know what sort of load is being put on the engine

As Lawson said. they are pretty useless... but they are damn fun to look at. especially if next to a rev counter (they both work in different directions)

Yeah I love watching the one in rhys' mini, its always flicking about! And I think they are meant to give some indication of improper set up, cause if the gauge goes to idle when you are accelerating then I'd say theres a problem! Although I think you'd know about it sooner than looking at the gauge lol. No more pointless than a bloody oil temperature gauge anyway, why didnt Rover fit a pressure one instead?!

No more pointless than a bloody oil temperature gauge anyway, why didnt Rover fit a pressure one instead?! when the butterfly is shut (idle) then that's when the most vacuum will acure as the engine is trying to suck in air but only a small amount will pass the butterfly. when your on full throttle the engine can suck in as much air as it likes so there is hardly any vacume in the manifold, infact it should be very close to normal atmospheric pressure. as for the oil temp, the story i heard was the first batch of sports packs had a oil pressure gauge, with in a few weeks/months people where returning them(under warranty) as the oil pressure had dropped even tho it was perfectly fine just not as high as high as after the engine had run in. so they changed it to a oil temp gauge. but yes both are pretty useless
