finally figured out how to get pics upp:P
i bought her back in septembre ish i think of a guy on here (braceyourself) soo some of the regulars might know what she used to look like
the main reason we bought her is because how good the body work was on her she practically had no rust at all!!
the main reason we bought her is because how good the body work was on her she practically had no rust at all!!
as she was a 1275 metro for insurance and personal prefrances i just changed it to a standard 998cc but have now put a stage on kit on her
first thing we did when we got her home was to strip her down completely back to bare shell
and were very pleased to only find 2 holes in her sills about 2 inches long so we patched over them and i admit not very well as we dont have a welder we had to turn to the guy up the road who only had and old ark welder it did the job but not to the best standard but they will be hidden so not worrying to much
then came pulling out the 1275 which me and dad did over the weekend came out no problem at all done it with a chain hoist and a few swear words:P(think i have photos of the engine bay empty)
when the engine was we stripped everything out of the bay cleaned it up and gave it a spray of white so as to be roughly the same colour as the rest of the car
next came the fun bit rebuilding the 998cc
thanks to timsmini i got a free engine which came in very handy
i also picked up a complete engine from a local guy for £100 even tho it was runnging when it was taken out we decided to re-build to be on the safe side
so we stripped down the new engine and took the pistons etc out replaced the piston rings shell bearings oil pump head gasket all the seals whish there are tons of
the guy up the road is a mechanic so he came to help too, we hstruggled with the piston rings as the compressor the guy had was a bit to big but we managed with the first but he snapped the second by accident soo had to order a new set of 4 when only need the top rigg for one piston but at least i have spares:P
we cleaned down the block itself and the gearbox dad was to scared to do much as he has no idea how gearboxes work:P replaced all the seals and gaskets so it went back together not to bad untill we cam to the bell housing casing as we didnt buy geniuinge gasket set just a readily avilable set the gasket was to thin and when it was tighten to the torque the gasket was compressed to much and the whole engine siezed up (silly mistake have now learnt our lesson)
that i can admitt was a very very long night think dad was close to tears after about the 4th hour tryin to figure out what was wrong we even had to call it a night and admoit defeat (he doesnt do that often ) so new day checked the spare engine whose bits and bolts were getting less form misplacing ours and the gasket was different so as a last ditch atempt i overnighted a gasket that cost me 70odd pence to bye and £7 to ship!! but was worth it as it only took us about 10 mins to fix the problem:P(havnt got piccs of this process as i was lazy but regret it now:()
then decided rather than just a blow over the paint work needed a re-spray was looking a bit shabby so asked around and got a local boy to spray it £350 for a total re-spray and rub down so i jamp at the chance
we rubed down the body and bonnet the easy bits and dad had started filling in the channels where the wing and the scuttle meet as we found alot of filler in there but turned out to be nothing just a slight de-seemed look so we carried on with it
we also de-bumpered her a guy that bought the 1275 form us came all the way from birmingham in a 106 with his wife and son was a shock when it went in the boot when we told him we were going to remove the lip he said best was to cold chisel it off which worked fine but readin on hear seem not the best idea?? i dunno
the guy thats sprayin it asked if we could put the engine back in just in case it marked the paint wokr when we were putting it all back in again so the engine went in the night before it was bieng picked up in true mini fashion:P we needed another couple of bits and bobs done before it was taken away like a quick rub down from us etc.
said good buy to her for what wa sonly suppossed to be at the most two weeks but turned into a month and a half!!!!
worst thing he still hasnt painted her!! not even under coated this really p****d >:(me and dad off even tho he had it over the cold spell where i can understand that painting it was inpossible due to the temp and snow ect but he had it for 2 weeks before this and it was supposed to be done in that time!!!
finally had enough of chasing it up and hearing all the excuses and had it back for the x-mas hols where a ton of work was supposed to be done but nothing ever goes right with this mini!!
when i did get it back i was more than pleasently surprised he had at least done something in the time he had her hes blended the arches into the body and its amazing it looks like a complete flip front very very well done same with the back their emeculate with him he also sorted out a few little dents that turned out to be lumps of filler but it now looks amazing so we mellowed a bit and she will be going back to him no matter how long he takes cuz his work is really good
when we had it back the thurday before the snow we had a list as long as my arm to do:P on the friday dad went out and fixed the new centre exit exhaust witch it stunnig and in the process caught a kidney infection so for most of the hols hes been laid up and shes been tucked up:P
when we finally got back out the main job was the wiring as it really needed to be tidied up as there were a few random leads going nowhere and other somewhere:P
this again was supposed to be done before x-mas form our mechanic friend but he again thought it was too chilly so after getting fed up dad tried it him self and kept triyn:P but fair play hes got it too work
we did have a few problems as we had no clue where to start:p and didnt know if the igniton key was working as it had a push start and had never wroked whole usoing the key weve now found out that it was the red and white wire was shot
after days of not getting anywhere not even turning over he got her to turn over on the push start after searching on the internet and in books and everything else he figured out how to wire the relays and and everything and he even got it too fire and run but it wouldnt turn off so back to the drawing board again:P
yesterday was the biggest breakthrough as not only does she start ont he key but also turns off on the key ans she sounds awsome
there is a bit of tunning needed to get her running perfeclty but all will come and for a first time rebuild of an engine were very proud of ourselves
we still have a huge list left too do but its nearling completion at last ill get some new photos of the car as well as these ar older ones and keep you updated
there are some things ive missed out as i didnt want to bore people lol but this is gwladys mafanwyi (dont let pretty girls you like choose your cars name!!) hope you like her
shall post more picks and updates as they come:)
after pulling of the chrome strip which there was alot of and will not be goin back on it left thaa crappy rubber stuff was a right pain to get off!
