driving down to a funeral earlier.....sooty started playing up ive got a major short? earth prob or something like that that i cant find..... 2 of the wires going to the starter / alternator burned through leaving the ignition light on, got that sorted but lost ignition light...any ideas....
also after being throughly soaked, ive got the passenger indicator on when sidelights are on, also no hazzards, the fule gadge reads full..(ok it was for a while but should have gone down by now...)
without the sidelights on ive got indicators and hazzards but the side lights flash....
ive been over the car checking and cleaning the earths and any connection that may be causing it but still nothing.....any more ideas???
the fuse box is new....but checked that ...also the 6 inline fuse box....took the lights off....took switches out....gonna hit the bottle soon and hopefully it will come to me in a haze of alachol...lol....
p.s. cured the starting problem yesterday, so now she starts ok with out her syringe...lol...

Hi Sooty, Thats a cracker of a fault you have there. Hard to know where to start.
OK, is this happening all the time or just when its damp or wet?
Sounds like lots of individual problems, have they all occured at exactly the same time? Did it all happen after the starter / alternator burn out?
Last time I had anything at all like this it was aproblem with the wiring loom in the engine bay, part of the loom had dropped down and the fanbelt was trying to rub its way through it. Check all the wiring loom that you can in the engine bay for signs of damage or overheating / melting!
When you said you've cured the burn out problem have you checked back up the wiring that burnt to see if theres any more melting that you haven't found yet?
I would say that there was a problem with the fuse box but if its new (and dry!) then I would rule that out!
Sorry I can't be of more help here but its a wierd one!
Think the bottle idea is a good one!!!!!!

well she was running ok last night...i was working on her yesterday, changing the little heater plug that goes on the inlet manifold....so did the manifold gasket as well....
i think ive sorted where the wires were broken...it was shorting out on the front of the gearbox, those wires are now sorted....ive got a spare wiring loom for the engine electrics here so may swap that over.....
i`m hoping that she`ll dry off and start working, its been raining so much today that shes probably water-logged
ty for the help....

Just a thought!
When you say that the fusebx is 'new', does that mean its brand new out of the box or new from another Mini?

Had a problem with a fusebox once where it looked fine but when it was unscrewed from the bulkhead the back of it was all corrosion and that was the problem! But if yours is brand new then thats another good theory gone to rats!!!!! jc

As your gauges have gone haywire, can I ask if you're wipers are parking by themselves? Oh and if you have a rev counter, is that working okay?
Either way if your wipers aren't parking by themselves, replace the wiper motor park-switch, because that can and will create all kinds of electrical short circuiting when it fails.
In my case it kept blowing the main fuse until I isolated the rev counter. In the case of my sisters old Mini that had no rev counter, her fuel gauge constantly read full.
The both problems were sorted by replacing that park-switch, but it's interesting to note that the fuel gauge on my sisters old Mini would read correctly if I sprayed WD40 down the back of the wiper motor (at the park-switch) for some time. Replacing it was the long term cure though.

my wipers have never parked....even with replacing the wiper motor...but they work fine...even in all this rain...but maybe some water has got onto the park switch bit.... rev counter is ok....fuses ok....just the petrol gauge that wonky.... will give wiper motor a spray before stripping the mini down to nothing...lol... thanks for the help

Well it could be a gauge or wiring fault or it could be due to the temperature sender itself. But I'd still replace this pesky little bleeder, because it could be causing problems for you: -

Mini Spares also supply a replacement multi-plug and part of the wiring loom if required too.

OK...after 8 hours of working on the thing....no different....
the wiper motor dosnt park but pinched byrons off his mini which works ok....still the same problems... took the dash out, all the lights, changed the engine electrics wiring loom....made sure any connections that could be causing a short were water tight and working ok.....dissconected all the center swithces...ie lights, hazzards, changed the flasher unit, flasher realy, ecu, put the tester onto nearly every bit of the car i could think of and found that the flasher relay (under the bonnet by the brake servo,) the hazzard switch and the indicator arms only have 6-7 volts going to them
going to strip off the wiring loom tomorrow and see if theres any brakes.....any ideas on what elce to try???
all fuses seem to be reading ok at 12 volts....theres no indicators at all, left indicators still on when side lights on ,as are the fog lights ...hazzards still flash ok but the side lights flash as well.......still no orange dash light (ignition)
AAAARRRRRRGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!

Wow! well done for today, what an good effort.
This ones got me stumped I'm afraid, don't know what more to suggest other than damage to the loom somewhere in the engine bay. Is the fusebox screwed to the engine bulkhead? is there soundproofing foam (wet?) under the fusebox? Have you opened the loom up back from where the burn out was? Have you tried swapping the alternator to see if the short is inside the alternator?
Sorry I can't be of more help
Good luck!

I'm wracking my brain cell here and i Can't think of anything other than what you've already done. If my brain cell comes up with anything I'll be in touch.

there is no soundproofing on the bulkhead, got some plastic between it and the fusebox so it dosnt short....tried byrons fusebox and its the same.....
where the wire burnt out, i changed the wiring loom (mine is in 2 bits , one for the engine and one for the rest of the car)
i`ll swap my alternator for byrons in the morning...see if that helps....
ty both for the replys

the car is running fine....she even starts without her injection of fuel into the injector...lol.... the earth on the battery has come loose but even with that screwed down its still not sorted.... as far as i know the live lead is fine, but will check again tomorrow
