This may be yet another 'long shot' but does your car have the 2 sets of steering column arm switches? and do they control the indicators, lights, horn and wipers? and isn't it all those ccts that you are having trouble with including ignition problems? Have you had the column shrouding off to see if there are any shorting or burnt wire problems around the ignition switch? As I say its just a long shot but the problem has to be something thats common to all the symptoms and maybe thats the ignition switch / column switches. jc

theres no vaccume pipe on dizzy, cause its an spi all the pipes go into the map sensor, ecu and inlet manifold.... it does have to 2 sets of arms on the steering coloum...but there is no control for the lights on there...only the high beam flash, this curcuit is'nt affected by the short, also checked the ignition switch , dissconnected the wiper arms both sides with no change.... i've rung jeremmy at barry mini spares, hes got a loom there for her but is not open till thursday....so i`m going to carry on trying things till then, if no joy its off to barry on the train ...thats gotta fix it ?

todays chapter in the saga
spent way too long on her today, checked and re-checked wiring off the fuse boxes (after studying the wiring diagrams all night)....made double sure the rear wire harness was'nt causing problems by disconnection it...tried in vain to find the dip switch???
put her together and she turned over once then would'nt turn again.....just a little click from the black relay box.....so i replaced the engeing wiring loom, she`ll tun over ok, spark at the plugs, poured fuel into the injection unit and it will not start.....it really tries but nothing, did notice when claening the plugs up that the gap on one of them had closed up so opened it as best as possible without feeler gauges....but even if that 1 plug is down it would have started...even if it is badly.....i guess thats why its was running very badly yesterday
looking into changing it all for a carb system.....much easier to follow lol......but need to decide before i pay for a new loom, either way its having a new loom but need to decide on which one...

I think it's under construction, so it'd be worth contacting them first. But this Mini electrical problems must be catching as mine is playing up now!!! Well we (me, my mother and 2 kids) went to the garden centre in Taffs Well today because my mother wanted a new fish tank and stuff. So we all went in our Mini. Then apart from my mother not liking the speed on the A470 (I was only doing the legal limit). on the way home my indicators stopped working and so did my rear demister. So yes it's fuse related, but I was really panicking as my brake lights were out too. Anyway I cleaned up the contacts, replaced the fuse and it's working more or less okay now. But it's a little bit touchy so the time has come to fit a brand new replacement. In fact when I spin the fuse around, the indicators sometimes speed up, or stop altogether, so it's definitely had it's day. I can't complain since it's the original and I'll be ordering a new hazard warning light switch at the same time.

Parts are on order from Somerford, because Mini Spares (who do discount) had no hazard warning light switches in stock. Anyway that switch and a new fuse box plus postage has set me back close on 40 quid!

I've said this before and cannot stress what a big difference it will make to fuse box related electrical problems.
Move the fuse box and all in-line fuses inside the bodyshell of the car!
It may not cure Sooty's electrical problems but since I did it on my Mini It's been sooooooooo much better. Plus you don't hit the back of your head on the bonnet catch when changing a fuse!!!!!
;D

Well I have an early Rover Mini Cooper that has a carburettor and that came with electronic ignition as standard.
It's basically the MG Metro type engine, but with a 3.1 final drive, electronic ignition and it runs unleaded. It did originally have a cat, but that got put down years ago.
After over 17 years and 96,000 miles, I've had no problems with either the carburettor or the dizzy and ignition system. So can't you hang on to the electronic dizzy anyway?
The points and condenser dizzy is sure to annoy after you've been used to electronic.
