the bit coloured pink is the wiring thats reading 6 volts....92 is the flasher relay...23 is the hazzard/indicator warning light unit and 14 is the indicator stalk switch..... just remembered....before i discovered the short in the 2 wires, the car would nt turn off at the key....had to switch the lights off to turn the engine off.....im hoping that fixing the shorted wires has stopped this but could it have caused any more problems???

Hi Sooty
One cause for you only having 6V on that pink line cct is that one of the 4 units is shorting out to earth and dragging your voltage down. It may be a pain but can you swap all 4 of them 1 at a time to see if the problem goes away?
Looking at that wiring cct one common thing to look at is 28 / 29 the hazard warning light switch.
Have you tried swapping that before?
Good luck

just spotted the bit about the lights and engine not turning off, my uncle had a simaler problem but was on a fiesta, turned out to be a relay tucked away under the dash, the only way we traced it was because there was a slight buzzing noise, changed that it it sorted the problem, Probably totally different problem but might be worth checking, I have all the old relays from Corina's car here if you do find one has gone thanks phil

Well this is todays installment.
got the new relay and flasher unit and now have indicators....annoying thing is that it looks like it was only the relay not flasher until as the old one works as well....
on prodding further with my tester.....theres 12 volt contininous power going into the flasher unit via a purple and orange wire....with 6 to 7 volts going out the other side...theres only 3 wires on it, the other being black (earth).....so crossed it with some wire and still no joy on the shorting problem, but it looks like theres a problem there....(no 23 on the diagram)
i swapped the alternator from byron car with no change.....left the wires off the alternator altogether and no change.....
checked the live wire running under the car near exhaust....it seems fine, no brakes or melting...
anyone got a gallon of petrol and a match !!!!!!!!!!

OK...after 8 hours of working on the thing....no different.... the wiper motor dosnt park but pinched byrons off his mini which works ok....still the same problems... took the dash out, all the lights, changed the engine electrics wiring loom....made sure any connections that could be causing a short were water tight and working ok.....dissconected all the center swithces...ie lights, hazzards, changed the flasher unit, flasher realy, ecu, put the tester onto nearly every bit of the car i could think of and found that the flasher relay (under the bonnet by the brake servo,) the hazzard switch and the indicator arms only have 6-7 volts going to them going to strip off the wiring loom tomorrow and see if theres any brakes.....any ideas on what elce to try??? all fuses seem to be reading ok at 12 volts....theres no indicators at all, left indicators still on when side lights on ,as are the fog lights ...hazzards still flash ok but the side lights flash as well.......still no orange dash light (ignition) AAAARRRRRRGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!! I'm pretty sure I've read that if the ignition light bulb has failed, then it will cause electrical problems? That bulb needs to be working, so try replacing it. You've already ruled out the alternator being at fault, so carefully strip down the dash to get at the clocks. Do you have a walnut dash, or just the standard Clubman/1275GT style pod?

lol...the clocks are hanging out....checked all the bulbs and they looked ok....so swapped it with a bulb that i know was working....still nothing
i`m thinking maybe a new loom??? cause i havent a clue where to check next...
think i`ll have to disconnect the lights and just use it in the day till i can find the fault...lol...

Well there you go, if you can't get that ignition light bulb to illuminate, then there is something seriously amiss.
I assume you have ensured all the earth leads are good and your battery is fitted the right way around?

Well what about the starter motor, solenoid or ignition switch?

Well what about the starter motor, solenoid or ignition switch? havent tried these.....byrons are different i think??? as for the petrol guage...it worked earlier, then i discovered that it wasnt connected in the boot? ive tried to track the damaged wiring, both brown wires, got as far as where the wiring goes into the bulkhead then lost the light and it got too cold.... thanks once again for all the help guys

I've got a horrible feeling that its burnt out cable 'somewhere' in the wiring loom after the alternator problem.
There are too many separate circuits and faults involved to be something simple and theres nothing common to all of them.
I'm baffled for any other answer.

would the voltage regulator cause problems if the clocks are removed, cause i took the clocks out and started the car.....ran fine...lol....
think i`ll have to strip out the wiring loom and check it all over...or get a new one....
thanks all !!!

ive checked the battery....when engine is off its at 12volts....give or take a few....when running it goes up to just over 13....so probably charging....
the charge warning lamp is dead....wont come on at all...even when engine running...tried new working bulb....same prob....gave the alternator plug a clean and wd40 squirt...before byron spotted the 2 alternator wires shorting out, the ignition light was stuck on all the time....even with the key out...now its just dead
i`ll recheck the alternator wiring tomorrow incase its regestering faulty....but it was ok yesterday, regestering 12 volts.... (i`m so glad ive got a tester, use it a lot on computers...lol...)
in the haynes...the wiring on some parts of the car id different....cant see that anyone has chopped it as its in the harness, all taped up with the yellow stickers still on...(i am on the right diagram...lol...) so its making it hard to source the wiring on some components....
i`ll try the bulb idea tomorrow...cant do any harm
i tried byron alternator earlier but lost red dash light as well as the charge light...so guess its the wrong one....
a big thankyou to all who have replied...keep any ideas comming...lol....
