as anyone actually done an spi to carb conversion???
my mini is getting worse by the day.....now shes not starting and i`m thingking its all down to this ignition and ecu system....plus the short that stuffing up the electrics....
i`m looking at poping a wiring loom off a 1990ish cooper and sticking carbs onto it....

I've been jokingly telling Tim to do that for years!! ;D Its got to be a good plan for the future now that Rover support for the ECU models has disappeared (if it was ever there in the 1st place!) Its far better to only have a carb (or two!!!!!) to sort out than an ECU and all its sensor problems to worry about. I know I'm biased but if you are intending to keep the Mini 'long term' then it has to be considered. I know what I would do if I was in your shoes though jc

Your choice completely with carb(s)
My 1380 conversion came with twin 1" 1/2's but I had the option of having a single 1" 3/4.
Coopers said that acceleration would be slightly quicker with twins and there would be slightly better top end but fuel economy would be obviously better with a single.
I have since removed the twins and fitted a HIF44 Metro 1" 3/4 and I think its fine.
But then again theres always Webbers!!!!!!!
HEE HEE HEE....... ;D ;D ;D

I've never had to do this conversion but some obvious points that need consideration are -
Exhaust / inlet manifold
Spark plugs fitting
Distributor
Alternator connection
Servo vacuum connection
Fuel tank / pump connection
You really need all the advice you can get from someone who has done this conversion before you start with the 'big hammer'!

if ive gotta do the exhaust manifold then its not too bad as its blowing a bit anyway...lol... i`m fitting a wire loom off a 1990 mini cooper so hopefully all the wiring bits will be on there.... i`ll trawl through the net and see whats needed.....
byrons car is running an electric pump so hopefully i can copy what theyve done on that to get it sorted fuel wise
it cant be any worse than it is right now as its a non runner.....

I have a few 1.3/4" carbs here - I'll see if I have a good one and get back to you

HIF44 was the standard carb as fitted to the early Rover Mini Cooper and it's pretty good carb too. Well my Mini Cooper has passed 17 years of age, has almost gone around the clock and all I've ever done is put a little fresh engine oil in that carb from time to time.
