we leaned the mixture and she then began coughing and splutering on the road,[ all this was done by computer with a sensor up the exhaust.

might sound strange but posibly a slightly bent or worn dizzy shaft?
i had it happen to an old golf, it would mis fire on 2 cylinders took us ages to figure it out
in our case it had got bent whilst other work was being done

Could it be a fuel delivery problem and its leaning out under load or could it be breaking down under load, like a bad plug (new plugs can fail) or condenser breaking down? Can the plugs be of the wrong heat range or something stupid like that?

prior to giving to the chap who looks after my car [ mechanically ] i chucked a whole bottle of redex in with just £5.00 worth of petrol,he has had it a week and cant find any missing hot or cold, checked all the timing ect but all good,so i guess i am lucky that its not the head gasket again. = vb

Voila. Job done. Can't believe that there was that much carbon / gum build up in the cylinder head / carb in such a short time though.. Anyway, job done and good news that the head didn't have to come off again.

your symptoms sound like my old 998 and all it needed was a carb overhaul.. in the end i think it was float damage or something that caused the underfuelling and stalling. try giving carb a good clean out and if that doesnt work overhaul it or get another one but make sure the next ones a good one.
