Right, 0k. Now the age of the mini is determined the only cable that seems to be missing is the white/ yellow stripe one which should go between the solenoid and the coil on the + connector. The diagram i looked at was an, up to 1988, when it should have been the later diagram.

And the white/red cable goes from the ignition switch to the starter relay.

I'm guessing this is for the tacho? There's on that matches that description but I've put it inside the black tube as I'm not having a rev counter anymore. The starter relay is by the break servo, I'll go look at it now. Btw I had a thought about why my engine might be cooking itself. I think the oil pump might be nackered perhaps. The oil on the dippy is still extremely clean, can barely make out the tide mark on it and also I didnt put a new oil filter on when I put the engine in (i know - my bad!)

Right. the tacho cable is white/black stripe and should be one of two connections on the minus side of the coil The white / yellow cable is or should be fitted as per previous post. As for the motor getting hot,,,,, 1. Is there any water in the rad and if so is the thermostat working as it should. 2. If the timing is still out that would cause it to get hot.

1. yes there is, and yes theres coolant. i put the thermostat in myself and assume its working but dont know for sure. the hose between the rad and thermostat housing is getting warm.
2. once its sorted and i can drive it I'll take it for the garage for timing and tuning.

Rob identified this to be the starter relay so I've taken a photo of it. Black, White & Red, Brown & Red and Brown & White. I'm crap at reading wiring diagrams so cant tell if this is how it should be Could the relay be jammed on? If I take the relay out what will happen / not happen when I put the battery cable back on?

Those are the correct cables going into the block. Won't do any harm to take the relay off and check for any corrosion on the connectors. I don't think it'll start if you take the relay off because you will effectively cause a break in the circuit.

There wasnt a thermostat when I had the engine, I took the one out of my 998 and put it in the housing myself. Should I remove it and see if that helps?

the vacuum on the dizzy should face number 4(closest g.box) rotor arm facing number 1 (timing side).. with this the timing on timing cover should be the 1st small tooth down from the large tooth. by the osunds of it the dizzys timing is way out and also your coil doesnt sound very strong.but also check the little things like rotor arm to points gap as the points could be burnt slightly causing a larger leap for the spark. therefore causing weak spark.
