Was heading out in the car today to go on the rolling road and was really looking forward to the day ahead. Drove up to Tescos to fill up the tank, headed off down the country lanes from a nice drive in the country. The perfect setting for a Morris Minor. Got about four miles from the house and had to stop at a set of traffic lights. Pulled away and it was like there was a blacksmith in the engine bay. There was a horrible banging noise coming from the engine, gradually getting louder Pulled over to take a look but there was nothing that seemed obviously wrong so called out the breakdown recovery lorry. After more than an hour of standing in the cold and some patchy rain the guy and the lorry arrived. The guy said his job was just to take me home but said he would have a listen to the engine but if anything else were to go he took no responsibility. So I started him up and a second later the guy was screaming "turn it off". He was an 'older gentleman' and said he worked on minors when they were new and recons that it’s the 'big end'. The noise come on all of a sudden though and I'm told that when the 'big end' goes it starts off as a knocking noise and gets gradually louder. Maybe I haven't noticed because I don't drive the car everyday? So they great day out I had planned was ruined and now I have car thats not going anywhere soon.

Just took the sump off and took the big end bearings off to inspect them and the problem was straight in front of me. The crank has a crack in it and lucky it didn't go completely in two when I was driving it. So I now need a new bottom end for the engine

Been talking to folk on the Moggy Forum and a guy on there has offered me a free engine. A fair way to travel to pick it up (Southampton) but its free and cheaper than buying one (Since my brother-in-law is picking it up and his company will pay for fuel ) ;D ;D ;D

Typical....think all is working then the new engine is a bit too much for the gearbox and worms out the problems in the gearbox. Result - I need to get a new gearbox now. Was driving along, stopped to let a car come down the hill and realised I have no first gear (pulling off up the hill in second was fun ;D) When I got home I realised reverse has gone as well. Not happy

Ouch. Hope it's not too serious. Maybe it's only a selector.

gutted for you mate! the moggie is way cool! crash box on 1st and reverse? Yep that's the one. Looks like I got the older 803cc box (to match the engine that was in the car when new, when I bought it it already had a 948cc engine in it). They can go together but the 803 box is 'delicate' compared to the 948 box and must have been on its way for a while and a 'new' 948cc engine putting out the power that the old 948cc engine SHOULD have been putting out just pushed it that bit too far. On the look out now for a 948 box to match up with the engine.
