The Story So Far...
Well my Dad and I were looking for a project car, we had spent some time looking at Escort Mk1s, but found that the longer we left it the more expensive they got. A few months ago my Dad had an epiphany, we should buy a Mini instead!
The more we thought about it the better the idea sounded. So the search began.
Then just two weeks ago I got a text message from both my Mum and my Dad saying they were bidding on a Mini, my dad sent me the URL to an eBay auction. This Mini seemed too good to be true. So when bidding finished and the reserve was still not met my Dad sent the owner a message. The guy told us we were not far from the reserve, so Dad offered him a deal. All that was left was a trip to Shrewsbury.
When we got there we found the Mini was as advertised, perfect. So we took her for a test drive and found there to be nothing hugely wrong that we could initially see, other than a small patch of rust on the A panel as advertised and a slight shake in the steering. The previous owner told us he had recently replaced the relay for the indicators and the exhaust. So we paid our money and off we went. A trip in an unknown car from Shrewsbury back to South Wales, a good test!
The mini ran well all the way back, making only three stops. One for a BurgerKing! One more to pump up the passenger side front tyre which helped to fix the steering shake and improved the handling straight away. The third stop was slightly more thrilling. After we had checked out the engine we had closed the bonnet, obviously, however it must not have closed properly, as at about 60mph on the way home (legal speeds of course) the bonnet suddenly lifted a few inches! Luckily signs pointed to parking within 1/4 mile so we eased off the speed and pulled in to rectify the problem! Unfortunately the indicator relay that had been replaced seems to have a loose connection as the indicators stopped flashing and now stick on...
The mini is now home, starts perfectly, has done less miles than all our other cars! She is called Alex, after one Mr. Alec Issigonis.
Update 14/5/09
We have had a lot of rust fixed. Cut the wings to fit the wheels. Fitted them and the arches. Bought the stage1 kit and exhaust too.
Update 04/07/09
Stage 1 kit and exhaust added, few more things to go before MoT time
The Future...
Well this is going to be a rolling project, so for now the idea is to make sure everything is working well and keep with the 998cc. Perhaps make some slight performance modifications, and some cosmetic ones too. The main plan is to be able to attend some 50th celebrations next year!
Update 14/5/09
Sort more rust, get checked for anything major before MoT. Fit everything else we have. Start thinking of other things we need. Get Tax, Tested, Insured and get on the road!
Update 07/06/09
Today we fitted a reverse bulb into passenger side as it didn't have one before. Fitted new spark plugs and leads. Adjusted tappets. Fitted rocker cover gasket. Painted underside of doors to protect from rust. Polished her up.
Still have to do some more things, oil n fuel filters. Stage 1 kit n exhaust. Rust patches. Finish up the arches. Get all the chrome bits fitted. Tax, Test, Insurance.
Update 04/07/09
New side repeaters, new float chamber gasket, new advance/retard vacuum hose, new oil filter, stage 1 kit and twin DTM exhaust all fitted.
Update 22/10/09
We got our MoT a few months ago now, not long after the last update.
Since then we have done a few miles in the mini, furthest being Birmingham for the Mini 50 event. The only problem we had was a collapsed wheel bearing (this was after mini 50) this has been fixed. We are enjoying the mini as she is for now. Some work will start next year, probably after march and nearer the summer time
Update 10/04/10
Well at christmas time some custom dials arrived and have been fitted, also new wipac quadoptic headlights arrived and have been fitted. Also a set of four wipac spot lamps arrived, only two have been fitted so far. Just today we won some twin HS2 carbs on eBay and are still on the lookout for a 12g202 or similar cylinder head!
Update 20/06/10
Hit our first major problem really, jb jnr crunched a gear change and the only gear left is 4th. Gonna be on the look out for a replacement with a 3.44 diff.
Update 25/08/10
Got a whole new engine from a late 90's cooper. So hopefully can use spares from the gearbox to fix the old one and get the car going again. Also our garage is nearly complete.
Conclusion
I hope I haven't bored you all too much with this first post. I will keep you updated as and when things happen, feel free to ask questions and I will answer them as best I can. Anything technical is best left to my Dad!
